Supplementing Your Nutrition

No nutrition supplements, exercise regime, vitamin or mineral can out work a bad diet. 

Maintaining a healthy exercise regime and a consistently balanced diet, dense in fresh fruit and vegetables is ultimately what we should all be aiming for. The unfortunate reality though, is that many of us regularly fall below this standard when it comes to our diet. Common Deficiencies


25% of the world’s population are believed to be deficient in Iron. 47% of pre-school children, 30% of menstruating women and 42% of young, pregnant woman globally are understood to be iron deficient, with a further increased risk of deficiency assumed to be prevalent amongst vegetarians and vegans. Symptoms include tiredness, impaired brain function and a weakened immune system. 


Iodine deficiency affects nearly a third of the world’s population. Iodine is essential for the normal functioning of the thyroid – responsible for growth, brain development, bone maintenance and your metabolic rate. Symptoms include an increase in heart rate, weight gain and shortness of breath. 

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is in some way utilised by almost every cell in your body. 20% of the UK population are thought to be vitamin D deficient with 60% of the population considered to have insufficient levels. Deficiency ordinarily occurs over a prolonged period with symptoms including muscle weakness, bone softness, increased risk of bone fracture and a weakened immune response. 

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is needed by every cell in your body but your body is unable to produce it. You must therefore get all your B12 requirement from the foods you eat. 80 – 90% of vegetarians and vegans are presumed to be vitamin B12 deficient as B12 is only found in sufficient quantity in animal foods. 

Absorption of B12 decreases with age. It is believed 10% of UK adults over the age of 75 and as many as 20% of all adults are likely deficient.


As much as half the world’s population are at risk of Calcium deficiency. Those most at risk are adolescent males and females as well as those that are critically ill. 70% of the Western population are thought to consume insufficient levels of Magnesium in their diet. Essential for bone and teeth structure as well as hundreds of enzyme reactions in your body. Symptoms of deficiency include muscle cramps, restless leg syndrome, fatigue, and migraines. 

Avoiding Deficiency 

Deficiency is a potential problem for us all with the most common and the examples listed above represent just the tip of the iceberg.

It is very hard to get everything we need from our diet alone, and that’s why nutrition supplements are a life saver.

One of the best sources of heme iron is only found in red meat. You would need to consume 280 grams of it daily to hit your levels, whilst also having to eat 250 grams of pumpkin seeds or close to 500 grams of dark leafy greens, to reach your daily requirement of non-heme iron. 

Similarly, (unless you have a particular liking of seaweed which packs an iodine rich punch) you would be required to eat 6 eggs, 500 grams of plain yoghurt or 125 grams of fish to meet your daily iodine requirement – these foods being considered a rich source of Iodine.

Rich food sources of Vitamin D include fatty fish and egg yolks but even then, to obtain sufficient levels you would be required to consume 100 grams of salmon, mackerel or sardines or 14 egg yolks every day. As for Calcium, 700ml of milk would hit your daily mark as would a huge 500 grams of dark green vegetables such as kale or spinach.
